                                             DESCRIPTION  of  SERVICES
Offered by Healing Arts Therapeutic Massage
(We will try to have pictures as soon as possible of each modality to help you gain a better understanding of what to expect during such sessions.  Be patient!)

-NEW-  NAP  TIME
It's often heard at Healing Arts post-appointment:
"I could have stayed their & just slept!"    or   "Wake me up when it's tomorrow..."
Many of us are just beginning to fully relax at the end of our appointments, and then we have to get up and disturb the rest we were just drifting off to.

Rest is vital to our wellness as it is during undisturbed rest (at night or a daytime nap) that our bodies' primary focus is to repair or replenish damaged or exhausted cells. When we are deprived of this necessity, we often experience mild or major illness, weight or mood fluctuation, headaches, groginess, etc.

This is excellent for those who have the time and just want to relax undisturbed for a while, or for those whose home or work environment are very rapidly-paced;
This is a place where you have a time and space reserved just for yourself to relax, reflect, rejuvenate, meditate.
And yes, YOU are deserving of positive wellness.
**To ensure availability, best requested at the time of scheduling.**

-NEW-  TRADITIONAL THAI MASSAGE
Thai massage, unique to other forms of massage that typically have the client on a massage table or seated in a massage chair, is performed on a Thai massage mat on the floor. There are no oils or lotions used, and the client is fully-clothed in his or her own attire that allows for movement as well as appropriately drapes the client. (Appropriate attire includes workout shorts or pants, yoga pants, short-sleeve or sleeveless shirt or loose-fitting long-sleeve shirt.)

Traditional Thai Massage is Hatha Yoga-based, hence the given nickname "lazy man's yoga", as the client is passive in the movements while the massage therapist moves the client into stretches or asanas (poses/positions), as well as using compressions with the palms, feet, toes, or fingers (similar to sports massage) to the sen (energy) lines (similar to acupressure) of the client's body. Doing these movements, gentle stretches, compressions helps to open "closed" or "tight" areas of the body where range-of-motion or movement is limited due to longterm wear-and-tear or due to a specific trauma or incident.

The nature of a Traditional Thai massage is gentle and slow-paced, yet impactful and positive results are usually noticeable during the session. In such practice, Traditional Thai Massage sessions typically last from about 1 1/2 to 3 hours, depending on the client's wellness needs (whether full-body or specific areas). Healing Arts offers sessions of therapeutic massage from 15 minutes up to 4 hours, and clients may discuss the duration and focus of a Traditional Thai Massage session with the massage therapist.

LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE
As stated by Jackie Noel, RN/LMT (Education Destinations CEU manual):
"This lymphatic drainage therapy uses external hands on positions and techniques to move fluid out of the body tissue and into the lymphatic system. The therapist uses different hand positions and movements to gently stretch the skin thus theymph system's microfilaments below the skin will open the lymph channels so fluid can move the interstitial fluid to the lymphatic system. These channels will be stimulated to contract and fluid will be propelled away from the tissue where it has pooled."

This modality uses very light pressure (about the weight of a nickel-coin, hand-to-skin).
Lymphatic drainage may be helfpul: before or after surgery; in recovery of soft-tissue injuries; to sluggish immune systems such as with colds and allergies; with symptoms of chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, mild depression; with "Traveler's edema"; to free blocked flow through scar tissue (surgery/injury); in improving the condition of the skin as it helps to remove waste and toxins; in lowering blood pressure.

MYOFASCIAL RELEASE THERAPY
Also referred to as MFR, Myofascial Release Therapy is a modality that encourages deep-tissue work, but without deep pressure. Pressure from the therapist's hands to the client's skin begins with about the weight of a nickel, and pressure will usually increase during the session but not to the point where the pressure would feel as if the therapist is "digging" into the tissue, as sometimes deep-tissue massage may feel.

Fascia is the connective tissue that surrounds every organ, every vessel, every cell of the body, and helps hold the tissues of the body together. Since fascia surrounds every part inside the body, it allows or limits movement of the body parts, such as the tendons and muscles and other tissue. Sometimes our tightness/restriction or soreness lies in the fascia, and not always our muscular tissue. For example: if your body is the muscle, and your clothes are the fascia, even if you are in excellent shape, but your clothes are too tight, you aren't going to be able to move around as much as you would with looser, more comfortable clothing. Healthy fascia moves and flexes with fluidity. Unhealthy fascia is tight, constricted, and sometimes sore, because it has stored trauma, in whichever form and severity the trauma has presented itself.

Imagine a hot-glue gun: The glue stick is solid and has little flexibility at first, but after the glue gun creates heat by slowly increasing the movement of the particles of the glue, the glue becomes more fluid and movable, with little restriction compared to its beginning state. Similarly, the slower and gentler movement of Myofascial Release Therapy encourages (it does not FORCE) fascia to release unnecessary tension.

Myofascial Release Therapy may be performed as a single modality or in combination with other modalities, especially with other forms of therapeutic massage or energy work (Reiki, etc.) The client may receive this work either fully-clothed on a massage table or chair, or appropriately draped with sheets on a massage table. As much skin contact as possible between the therapist's hands and the client's fascia is preferred, but is not required. If clients know ahead of time that they will be receiving Myofascial Release Therapy, they are encouraged to wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing (shorts, or pants that can be rolled up to the knees, and a top that has short sleeves or is sleeveless).

SWEDISH  MASSAGE
Whether for deep-tissue rehabilitation or routine stress reduction, this mode of therapeutic massage allows a person to improve range-of-motion / felxilibity, blood circulation, and the release of endorphins (the body's natural pain killer) in the muscular, tendonous, and fascia tissues. Often Triggerpoint Therapy is used during a Swedish massage, as well as routine stretching and myofascial strokes.

TABLE THAI  MASSAGE
Techniques adapted from this magnificent healing art from Thailand can be incorporated to a Swedish table massage. Stretching motions and palm and sole compressions by the therapist, similar to gentle waves of the ocean onshore, help to open areas of the client's body which are typically "closed" or tight and lacking proper circulation of oxygenated blood to muscular, tendonous, and fascial tissues. Some techniques may require the therapist to kneel or stand on the table during a client's massage therapy session---The client will always be informed and asked permission prior to using such techniques. As with all therapies, we ask that you as the client use active verbal communication with the therapist performing Thai techniques.

ENERGY THERAPIES (Reiki, White Time, & Egyptian Healing Rods)
Experience the gentle healing power of Reiki, White Time, and Egyptian Healing Rods!  Attuned chakras** helps reallign the energy flowing throughout your aura (and body), aiding the recipient through gentle yet noticable transitions into vibrant health. Not only may Reiki or White time be done inside or beyond our facility, they may be done at long distance. It is not always necessary for the practicioner and the recipient to be at the same location in order for Reiki or White Time to be administered and received. In addition, these wonderful healing arts may aide the recipient beyond the barrier of time: energy therapy may be utilized to aide in the healing of a past occurence or an anticipated future coming. While energy therapies may have a spiritual nature, they are not religion- or belief-based. One does not have to believe any certain thing in order to perform, receive, or know about energy therapies, HOWEVER, it is very important to set a positive intention for both the duration and outcome/following of the session. Positive intentions (thoughts, feelings, and actions) encourage growth and promote manifestation; Negative intentions (thoughts, feelings, and actinos) hinder growth and discourage manifestation. It is also possible to be spiritual and at the same time scientific. Anyone who has ever studied physics understands that all matter has vibrational value, or radiates energy; Everything, living and non-living, has/radiates energy.
**What are chakras? In a brief description, a chakra is an intersection of energy pathways. We have thousands of them throughout and radiating from our bodies, and one will see that there are seven major or primary chakras on which body/energy workers generally focus: Crown/Spiritual (crown of cranium and extending upward into the universe, violet or white), Third Eye/Brow/intuitive (browline, indigo), Throat/expressive (mouth/neck, blue), Heart/love (heart/sternum area, green--love, as in emotional releases, intention, soul conciousness..), Solar Plexus/self-manifestation (diaphragm, just above the navel, yellow), Sacral/creativity (just below the navel, orange), Root/grounding/stability (coccyx and extending through legs and feet, connecting to the earth, red). Each chakra radiates a different level of vibration. Think of the vibrational values of the light spectrum: red has a lower frequency, and white has a higer frequency.

STEAM  THERAPY
An ancient technique still useful even today, steam therapy aides the body in detoxification on many levels. With all of the body under an arched tent or canvas (except the client's head and neck) on a massage table, steam is produced from a heating mechanism. The pores of the skin open as the temperature elevates from the warm vapor traveling into the canvas from the feet toward the shoulders. With the Steamy Wonder Portable Sauna, people have used steam therapy to help improve the texture and tone quality of their skin, with weight loss and cellulite reduction, relieving sore joints and muscles (reduces inflammation, and pain related to rheumatic disease), and relieves the uncomfortable symptoms of asthma and allergies.

CHINESE  CUPPING
In earlier years of China, the people originally used bamboo sections as "cups" for this procedure. This form of cupping uses moderate (comfortable) suction on the client's skin under the cup, encouraging the flow of blood and Qi ("chee") from deep to surficial layers, and throughout the channels of the body. While the cups may appear to raise the skin only fractions of an inch above its normal position, the temporary adjustment of the soft tissues by the suction of the cup will affect Qi flow as deep as 4 inches into the body. Generally cups are moved back and forth along the skin to encourage the flow of blood/Qi, but occasionally some cups will be left stationary for a significantly short period of time. ***Sometimes cupping may leave red or pink marks on the surface of the skin. While this is typical and harmless to the person's skin or overall health, these markings are only temporary (lasting about 2 to 10 days) and are not always the case for every person, nor every session for the same person.

REFLEXOLOGY
It may feel like a hand or foot massage, but Reflexology is not a massage. This ancient yet very scientific technique is based on the premise that there are reflex points and zones in the feet and hands (and ears and the iris of the eye) that *reflect* or portray a layout or map of the body. Although only the hands or feet are the areas being worked on directly, the entire body benefits from this therapeutic work. Everyone can benefit from foot or hand Reflexology, and it is an excellent alternative if modalities that involve more body contact (such as massage therapy or Chinse Cupping) should not be administered on a person; It is a very highly-effective modality that positively affects the entire body without working directly on all the areas of the body.

EAR  CONING  -or-  EAR  CANDLING
Also referred to as Auricular clearing/cleansing, Ear Coning is a process by which a long and narrow, tapered, hollow candle is lit on one end, and the non-lit end (narrower end) is gently and comfortably inserted just inside the outer ear. The candles are 100% non-bleached cotton dipped in 100% beeswax infused with herbs, essential oils/extracts or gem essences. When the larger end of the cone (away from the head) is lit, the smoke follows the inside spiral of the cone/candle and funnels into the ear. The purpose of this is that, by infusion with medicinal herbs, essential oils, extracts, or gem essences, is to help balance the inner ear, upper respiratory system, soothe (and sometimes diminish) headahces and dizziness caused by buildup of excess fluid, earwax/yeast or by stress which may cause the tensing muscles to pull down on the occipital lobes of the brain. In some cultures this is an age-old common household practice for children and adults alike.

PARAFFIN  DIP
Paraffin wax, when heated/metled, has a generous list of health benefits. Not only do Paraffin wax dips help to soften and smoothen rough skin (when infused with Aloe---which we use), but it helps greatly in improving the mobility/elasticity of the skin it is applied to. But the most frequent use of Paraffin wax dips is for the relief of Arthritis pain. To have a Paraffin dip only takes a short time (10-15 minutes treatment time, and just a few extra minutes to apply, cover, and later remove) but the effects are immediate and long-lasting. While the procedure is very short in duration of time, the wax takes hours to melt in order to use. Keep in mind that your appointment time may need to be at least 3 or 4 hours after the time of your call to schedule.
